Issuance in the securitization markets was very much asleep this year despite a slew of government initiatives aimed at jump-starting interest in the market. In U.S. residential mortgage-backed securities, there were 310 deals done for a total of $153.48 billion, a paltry figure compared to the 876 deals worth $643.49 billion closed last year, according to data from Dealogic. In Europe, 37 deals worth $39.86 billion closed. The story in U.S. commercial mortgage-backed securities is even more telling, with six deals adding up to $5.39 billion getting inked, compared to 88 worth $223.17 billion last year.
